Swarm Intelligence [Voitax / Instruments of Discipline]

Live / DJ, Travels from Berlin, GER

With a darkly discography growing at the speed of his reputation, Simon Hayes’ Swarm Intelligence project is bringing a singed shamrock charm to the dysphoria of his creative pursuits. Hailing from Dublin and maintaining his trans-European connections with releases for Earwiggle, it’s been the German capital he’s called home for some years now, and following initial albums for Ad Noiseam and Acre Recordings, his music as Swarm Intelligence finds itself firmly nestled in the belly of Berlin with labels KilleKill, Instruments Of Discipline and VOITAX.

Providing the neoteric industrial sounds of VOITAX with its debut full length in 2018, lauded by Secret Thirteen as a “masterfully-crafted” work, he’s been branded by the publication “as a major player” circumnavigating the harder-edged nether-systems of rhythmic noise and techno. Forming the Diasiva collaboration with Mads Lindgren, aka Monolog, it’s here that Hayes’ roots date back to an early breakcore sound, with his gothic sensibilities and abrasive modus traceable to the squat parties he once played, and music released through Submerged’s experimental drum and bass label out of Brooklyn, NYC, Ohm Resistance.

Garnering a mass of support from within the body politic of Berlin’s industrial scene, Swarm Intelligence’s music has been garnered by the likes of Tommy Four Seven in his Resident Advisor podcast to appearing in clandestine Blackest Ever Black sets performed by Surgeon. With the grainy visage of his live show for Boiler Room testimonial to the critical praise Swarm Intelligence has received, in addition to podcasts for The Brvtalist and appearances at Krake Festival, Hayes’ ability to channel fear, hope and absolution in equal measure is what’s delivering his sound from the burned out mass of imitation.
