DJ Slugo [Subterranean Playhouse / Dance Mania]

Chicago original DJ Slugo has been at the forefront of the city’s raw, underground dance sound since the early 1990s. As a founding figure of the legendary Dance Mania label alongside Paul Johnson (RIP) and DJ Deeon (RIP), Slugo helped define the Ghetto House and Juke movement and establish Chicago as a global force on the dance floor.
Known for seminal tracks such as “Wouldn’t You Like to be a Hoe Too,” “A Blunt,” “Godzilla Track,” “Where the Rats,” and “DJ’s On the Low,” Slugo’s influence extends far beyond Chicago. Underbeat Magazine described his Cardboard Booty album as “the most influential Ghetto House CD ever made,” dubbing him “the Ghetto-father of the American Dance floor.” His Chicago Juke DVDs also reached more than 2 million views in 2017, further documenting the culture and sound he helped shape.
His impact has been recognized by artists around the world, with Daft Punk crediting Slugo by name and referencing “DJ’s On the Low” in their iconic track “Teachers.” More recently, he was featured by name on HBO’s Ballers alongside his track “I Ain’t Yo Baby Daddy.” Slugo has also delivered remixes for Nina Kraviz and Missy Elliott, while continuing to develop new collaborations with artists and labels across France, Iceland, Japan, and beyond.
