x3butterfly [Paragon]

DJ - Travels from NYC, USA

Pronouns: they / them

x3butterfly is a Mexican-American DJ and producer native to Detroit.

With a background in experimental performance art and interdisciplinary studies completed at California Institute of the Arts - x3butterfly’s call to clubland eventually saw the artist take up a life in Europe before ultimately making a move to New York.

Maintaining a transient ability to float across the Atlantic when the sonic nature of Berlin calls, x3butterfly’s breakthrough as a DJ has allowed for sets to pierce clubs like Panorama Bar, Ohm and Oxi, to others across continental Europe and North America, while successfully securing tours throughout Asia & Australia too.

Holding it down in NYC as a resident at Paragon, and regular guest at clubs like BASEMENT and Nowadays, x3butterfly’s sound is heavily influenced by their background as a dancer, both classical and contemporary. Inspired furthermore by early Throbbing Gristle and Coil, they align themselves with UK club culture and Detroit techno, as well as integrating euphoric sounds of Chicago house. x3butterfly considers their approach to DJing the intersection between the somatic and sonic.

Translating ego, fantasy, intimacy, and spirituality into an artistic medium, x3butterfly can be heard combining jungle, drum and bass, R&B and dubstep with dark, industrial and experimental sounds, as much as it can be house, hard breaks, club jams, UKG and baile funk.

As a fluid identifying artist, x3butterfly made ground in Mexico by helping their home town of Guanajuato host its first queer party, alongside online appearances for Boiler Room and The Sound Gallery. No stranger to radio either, x3butterfly mixes can be found on The Lot Radio, NTS and Rinse FM - next to delivering The Lowdown’s 150th podcast, and inaugurating Paragon’s Residence Mix Series.

By embracing a transatlantic vision of underground culture, queer communities and experimental scenes, x3butterfly’s improvisational technique and interdisciplinary approach flies by its own wings.
