x3butterfly is a Mexican-American DJ and producer native to Detroit. With a background in experimental performance art and interdisciplinary studies completed at the California Institute of the Arts, x3butterfly’s call to clubland eventually saw the artist take up a life in Europe before ultimately making a move to New York.
Maintaining a transient ability to move fluidly across continents, x3butterfly’s breakthrough as a DJ has unfolded on a global scale, with sets at Panorama Bar, Badaboum, YuYu in Mexico City and Final Taipei, as well as appearances at festivals including Solstice, Dekmantel Selectors and Honcho Campout. These touchpoints form part of a broader international trajectory that continues to expand across Europe, North America and Asia.
x3butterfly has been based in New York since 2021, performing across a constellation of the city’s clubs and parties, including recurring appearances at BASEMENT, Nowadays and other vital nodes of the underground. Their sound is deeply informed by a background in both classical and contemporary dance. Inspired by early Throbbing Gristle and Coil, they move fluidly between UK club culture, Detroit techno and the euphoric accents of Chicago house, approaching DJing as an intersection between the somatic and the sonic.
Translating ego, fantasy, intimacy and spirituality into an artistic medium, x3butterfly can be heard combining acid, electro and dubstep with dark industrial and experimental textures, as much as drum & bass, house, breakbeat, club jams, UKG and a variety of Latin influence. Each set gestures toward surprise and world-building.
As a fluid-identifying artist, x3butterfly made ground in Mexico by helping their hometown of Guanajuato host its first queer party, alongside online appearances for Boiler Room and The Sound Gallery. Their work has since travelled widely, with mixes airing on NTS, Rinse and other global radio outposts, and features in publications such as Mixmag, DJ Mag, Crack Magazine and Paper Magazine. Releases on Subglow, Plot Records and DALF Records further trace their sonic evolution, while their sound design has shaped a number of contemporary gallery exhibitions.
By embracing a transatlantic vision of underground culture, queer communities and experimental scenes, x3butterfly’s improvisational technique and interdisciplinary approach flies by its own wings.
